We were created for God’s glory. Which means we are to glorify God. (See Created for God’s Glory)
The first step is to repent and believe in Christ. Salvation is essential. Until a person has received Christ as Lord and Savior, that person and God are enemies. (Romans 5:10)
But! Once we are saved, we are in an eternal loving relationship with God, headed to bliss.
All Christians should determine to live for God’s glory. He – Father, Son, Holy Spirit – saved us from eternal condemnation, reconciled us to Almighty God, and is making us more like Christ! We should be exalting over His immense grace. We should be thankful every moment. We should glorify Him every moment.
Glorifying God means to live for Him with your whole life AND to glorify Him moment by moment.
Glorify God with your whole life
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. (Romans 12:1)
Determine to be a living sacrifice to Almighty God.
Make Him your focus. Think about Him. Pay attention. Make glorifying Him your aim. Live purposefully with His glory in mind. Prefer Him above all else.
One critical element is trust. When we fully trust Him, doing His will is a joy, knowing our loving Father is in total control. Contentment inevitably follows.
This requires a decision, but a decision that is refreshed and deepens over time as we come to know Him better and better.
Glorify God moment by moment
Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
We need to build a habit of asking God if a particular word or action brings Him glory. If not, DON’T!
There are a lot of specific things we can do which bring Him glory, for example,
- Prayer in Christ’s name (that is, prayer consistent with who Christ is),
- Obedience,
- Confession (Joshua 7:19-20),
- Telling others about Him,
- Giving thanks. Thanksgiving is a sacrifice and glorifies God (Psalm 50:23),
- Praising Him
- And much more, of course. Something to pray about!
Realities and Prayers
We won’t glorify Him continually, of course. But we should.
Father, help me make glorifying You my goal, my motive, my criteria, for everything I think, say, and do. Help me constantly ask myself: “Does this glorify God?” And then adjust so it does!
