Jesus and his disciples were traveling and stopped at a Samaritan city. Jesus, wearied by the trip, sat at the well, and His disciples went to the city to buy food. Two days later, many there believed that Jesus is the Savior of the world.
What happened?
There is nothing in the account that indicates the disciples told anyone about Jesus. The disciples, who had seen many signs and miracles and had heard what Jesus said, apparently stayed silent.
But Jesus talked with a woman at the well, and she, a women not respected in that city, told many about Jesus. Her message:
- A fact: “A man who told me all the things that I have done.”
- A question: “This is not the Christ is it?”
- A request: “Come and see.”
Encouragement
That woman’s actions encourage me. She didn’t know very much, but she did know what Jesus had said to her. She was not respected, but had the courage to speak up. She spoke to many. And many believed:
From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.” (John 4:29)
Many more believed because of His word; and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.” (John 4:41–42)
Rewards
I wonder how that woman’s life changed. At the very least, many actually spoke to her.
And Jesus made clear that those who sow and those who reap rejoice together (John 4:36).
Don’t sell yourself short! When called, SOW!
